ThredUP is one of the largest closets for used clothing and accessories on the Internet. In this Thredup test, we will show you how you can make money selling clothes online.

With ThredUP you can save up to 90% on new models from brands like J.Crew, Anthropologie, Mini Boden, Crewcuts and others. You can also earn a pretty penny.

In this test, we will look at ThredUP in detail, including advantages and disadvantages as well as tricks and tips.

You can decide if ThredUP is the right online community for you to buy and / or sell clothes. Let's dive right into this huge closet …

What is ThredUP?

ThredUP is the world's largest online marketplace for used and new women's and children's clothing and accessories.

It prides itself on changing the way people think and interact with used goods.

It is part of a larger collaborative consumer movement that encourages consumers to live in a more collective, shared economy.

This groundbreaking privately owned start-up was founded in 2009 by James Reinhart, Oliver Lubin and Chris Homer in Cambridge, Massachusetts and is located in downtown San Francisco with distribution centers across the United States.

They also have two retail locations, one in California and one in Texas.

Registration for ThredUP

It's really easy to sign up for a ThredUP account. You can use your email, Facebook or Google account for this. As soon as you have registered, you will be asked if you need help setting up your "wardrobe".

If you choose yes, you will be asked for your sizes for tops, dresses, waist, shoes and how much do you normally spend on jeans? (less than $ 50, $ 50 – $ 100, or more than $ 100).

After answering these questions, you will receive a “cupboard” with suitable articles in which you can shop. Here are some examples of what ThredUP chose for me:

Express Hobo-Style Bag for $ 36.99 ($ 80 new) Michael Kors Faux Fur Vest for $ 64.99 (new $ 248) pair of Lululemon Athletica Yoga Pants for $ 50.99 ($ 98 new) pair of Dansko clogs for 34 $ 99 ($ 119 new).

What can I buy from ThredUP?

You can buy quite a bit from ThredUP. For women, the clothing categories are: normal, premium and designer dresses, tops, pullovers, coats and jackets, jeans, pants, skirts, shorts and active clothing.

There are also categories for shoes, accessories (belts, sunglasses, tights, hats, gloves, scarves, watches, make-up bags and card holders), handbags (wallets, laptop bags, weekend bags, purses, make-up bags, diaper bags and backpacks) and fashion jewelry (necklaces, rings , Earrings, bracelets and brooches).

In the women's section you will also find separate categories for maternity, sizes and juniors.

At ThredUP you can also buy children's clothing, accessories and shoes. Sizes range from premature babies to 20 for clothes.

Although men's clothing, accessories and shoes are NOT for sale at ThredUP, they are boys.

For girls there are categories: dresses, tops, sweaters, coats and jackets, overalls, jeans, pants, shorts, skirts, active wear, swimwear, costumes and accessories.

For boys there are categories: shirts, sweaters, coats and jackets, overalls, jeans, pants, shorts, skirts, active wear, swimwear, costumes and accessories.

Look for ThredUP coupon codes in your email or homepage. They often have great promotions, such as a 40% discount on your purchase.

For tax purposes, ThredUP is required by law to charge sales tax on orders shipped to the following states: California, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, New York (some items), Pennsylvania, and Texas.

How much does shipping cost for buyers?

There is a flat shipping fee of $ 5.99 for regular USPS mail (3 to 8 working days after the item is shipped) or $ 11.99 for express delivery (2 days after the item is shipped).

For purchases over $ 79, shipping is always free (too high if you want my opinion). You can earn unlimited free shipping (for the next month) if you spend $ 150 or more in a calendar month.

A cool promotion that ThredUP is currently doing is free shipping in return for allowing push notifications on your smartphone (such as texts that happen to be displayed with current or exciting news).

To do this, download the ThredUP mobile app for Apple or Android. If you activate push notifications, you will receive free standard shipping every time you order a mobile app.

ThredUP is currently shipping orders to the 50 states of Washington, DC, Guam, Puerto Rico, APO / FPO / DPO addresses, and to over 20 countries outside the United States, including the United Kingdom.

All orders shipped to APO / FPO / DPO, Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, Puerto Rico and Guam will be received via USPS (however, some may arrange for FedEx to ship). All other orders outside of the United States are delivered through Borderlinx.

What are goody boxes?

There is a really fun new limited edition product that you can buy at ThredUP: "Goody Boxes". Goody Boxes were launched in autumn 2017. They are filled with unique finds curated by ThredUP and adapted to your preferences.

Goody Boxes offer free shipping, free returns, and free home trials. This is not a subscription service. Each box is unique and tailored to your style and budget. There is a $ 20 deposit (for purchase) and you only pay for what you keep.

How does the sale work?

Once you've signed up with ThredUP and see the wonderful selection of items you can buy, you should probably consider selling your unwanted items to fund your new habit! Although ThredUP item savings are typically 90% off retail, you can still make money selling items here.

First, you need to order a kit (also known as a bag). Unfortunately, ThredUP has become so popular that ordering a kit is not always easy. In fact, the website placed new kit orders for several months in autumn 2017.

It's pretty annoying, especially for regular sellers like me. If you can order a new kit, you have two options (if you want to make money there is a third option that we'll talk about later if you don't want to make money).

Choice 1: A FREE standard bag

If you choose this option, ThredUP will send you a huge, pretty, dotted, heavy envelope. You fill it with whatever you want to sell and send it back to ThredUP (the shipping is already paid for and the label is attached. You can simply take it to the post office or arrange a free pickup from your postman – just peasey).

This option is a good choice for those who don't need to earn a quick penny. It will be a long time before ThredUP processes your bag in California filled with the items you want to sell.

The ThredUP website states that it takes about 7 weeks to process, but it took up to three months to process my bags. Once the bag has been processed, you will be paid for your accepted items and NO CHARGE will be deducted from your income.

Choice 2: An accelerated bag worth $ 16

If you choose this option, ThredUP will send you a huge, pretty, dotted, heavy envelope. You fill it with whatever you want to sell and send it back to ThredUP.

This option is a good choice for those who want to make money faster than the standard free pocket option. It takes about a week for ThredUP to process your bag once it arrives in California and is filled with the items you want to sell.

This is a HUGE time difference than the first option. Once the bag has been processed, you will be paid for your accepted items and a fee of approximately $ 16 will be deducted from your income (ThredUP says: "The accelerated fee may vary as needed. We will always tell you about the current accelerated fee inform the time when you order a kit. ”)

Choice 3: A free donation bag

The third choice doesn't bring you money, but you do a good deed. This option, known as the "FREE Donation Bag", allows you to donate all items that you send back to ThredUP in your free bag for charity. You will receive a tax certificate by email.

Another thing about this option is that men's items are accepted in these free donation bags.

If you're curious about where your bag is in the ThredUP process, log into your account and click on "My Sales History" in the drop-down menu. Here you can check the status of your bag. This is a great feature!

What sells?

Just because you send something to ThredUP in your pocket doesn't mean that you accept it. I am a regular seller and they take about 50% of every bag I send in. This is actually higher than their average (40% of every bag sent in).

ThredUP has professional buyers who carefully evaluate each item the company receives and determine its quality and ThredUP's ability to resell it.

Unaccepted items are donated to third-party sellers or textile recycling partners who use them to make carpets. It is possible that your unaccepted items will be returned for a fee. If you would like to receive the unaccepted items that we have returned to you, select the "return protection" option when ordering your bag.

Here are some tips for what ThredUP evaluators are looking for:

Apparently clothing and items that fit into one of the above categories. Item in very good condition. Items with stains, holes, pilling or signs of wear and tear will not be accepted. Clothing, shoes, etc. should be trendy (e.g. "stylish", fashionable, hip, hot). Over 35,000 brands are accepted by ThredUP (there is no list of unaccepted brands). Within these 35,000 brands, here are some that you list as favorites: Baby Gap, Crewcuts,

H&M, Lilly Pulitzer, Rue21, Vera Bradley, Black Market at the White House and Zara.

Do not send unaccepted items! Disposing of these items costs ThredUP money and is not cool. Items that are not accepted are: non-clothing items (toys, books, sports equipment, etc.), unbranded children's clothing (women can be shipped without a brand), nightwear, underwear / briefs, slippers, used tights (new tights are fine), pajamas, Robes, ball gowns, bridesmaid dresses, wedding dresses, men's clothing, items obtained illegally (or containing sensors), homemade or modified items, fake items or accessories, local or niche clothing, clothing with graphics or references to hometown teams and places that do not have a broad national audience, Items that contain language or content that are deemed inappropriate for a family-friendly audience, belt bags, tablet and cell phone cases, real fur, toe rings, hair accessories, items without size, maternity bands and work clothes.

How much does ThredUP pay?

Is it worth selling on ThredUP unlike other websites? Let's look at this example to answer: If you want to sell Lululemon Athletica casual pants, ThredUP will pay you about $ 7 if they are accepted. If you sell them on eBay or Poshmark, you will likely get closer to $ 25 to $ 30. However, using these websites requires a lot more work.

The nice thing about ThredUP is that the company made it very easy for you to sell your used clothing with very little effort and possibly without money. So if you estimate your time and energy like a currency, the lower payout for your items at ThredUP may be worth it for you.

Be sure to check out ThredUP with Payout Estimator before submitting your first bag. If you squirm due to the payout being too low, this is not the right online marketplace where you can sell your used GAP cardigan (estimated payout to you 65 cents).

How do I get my money?

You get paid at ThredUP in one or two ways: in advance or as a shipment. You can't choose, ThredUP does, and it can be different for every item (not every bag).

If you decide in advance, you will receive a payment once these items have been processed. You have a better chance of prepayment if the item is trending, in season, in great condition, and likely to sell quickly.

If your item has been selected for the shipment, you will be paid for it when sold. This can take a while. The amount you pay depends on the original price, brand and category of each item.

Consignment items are usually in excellent condition, but unique and not necessarily in season or trendy at the moment. Shipments are listed for 84 days. They can be reclaimed 7 days after their first listing up to 14 days after the end of their listing window.

To actually receive your money after depositing it into your ThredUP account, you can transfer the money to PayPal, purchase a Visa® prepaid card or use your credit as credit for your own purchases. You also have the option to donate it to charity. The Visa® prepaid card will be sent to your home address.

There is a 14 day delay when you can withdraw your money through PayPal or a ThredUP Visa prepaid card.
